Cyber-attacks on the smartphones are increasing day by day. It is becoming common in our daily lives and affecting our smartphones in very wrong way. The attacks result in stealing of personal information, financial frauds or even making our devices vulnerable to use.
There are multiple types of cyber-attacks on Smartphones which targets our smartphones. Let’s discuss those and its preventions.
- Malware: You might have heard this term a lot in your daily lives. What is it? These are nothing just malicious software that infect our smartphones. These comes in various forms such as viruses, worms, ransomware, spyware, and trojans and these comes in our smartphones through app downloads, email attachments, or malicious websites.
- Phishing: Cyber attackers use phishing for stealing our personal information form our devices. They trick users in providing information such as credit card details, passwords, address and more. These often happens through websites which are fraudulent but seems legitimate. These websites are very dangerous.
- Ransomware: As the word suggest itself, it is related to demand of money. These attacks encrypt the data on the smartphones and attackers demands money from the users to decrypt the data. Users gets logged out of their devices and lost all the control.
- App-Based Threats: These are very dangerous apps. Mostly the play store and app store are safe to download apps from their platforms abut downloading of apps in Android from web can result in such type of attacks as there are no security checks on third party apps. After installing malicious apps, the phone is at risk. There is a chance of stealing of data, tacking user activities or providing attackers an access to the device.
- Physical attacks: If a smartphone gets stolen then its also very much dangerous as attacker has control to your device in their hands. They can steal sensitive information, manipulate people in your contacts lists and lot more bad things. Its always suggested to be careful with your smartphones and always check your smartphone when somewhere outside.
Prevention from these Attacks:
- Update Software: It is highly recommended to update your smartphone OS whenever the update comes. Because smartphone companies include multiple fixes to issues in software which can lead to a smartphone cyber-attack. So, it is highly recommended.
- Install Apps from trusted Source: It is recommended to install apps only from play store on Android or a trusted website which has no previous history of malicious apps and fraud apps on its platform. Being extra careful while downloading an app can save you and your devices.
- Strong Authentication: Always use strong authentications on your smartphone so that, even if your smartphone gets compromised it becomes difficult for the attackers to steal any information. Always use strong passwords, biometrics (FaceID or Fingerprint) to protect the device. Kindly use 2 factor authentication for all the app accounts as it adds another security layer.
- Tracking: If your smartphone gets stolen always makes settings which makes it easy to locate your device or to turn off features that can lead to data leak. In both Android and iOS these days there are options to do so. Always turn off control center or quick setting when device is locked, turn on the device location settings (Find my device), turn off USB connection when device is locked and can also turn on a feature which can gives you an option to take a selfie when the thief tries to turn off your smartphone. These can help in finding the device.
- Avoid Public WIFI: Always avoid public WIFI’s as they are not secure and hackers are always looking for people who connects to the unsecure public WIFI’s. Use VPN if it’s required to connect to Public WIFI’s.
- Links and attachments: Always be cautious while downloading an attachment from the email or clicking a link on an email. Make sure that email has come from a trusted source and kindly report or delete the email with suspicious attachments or links.
Cyber attacks on smartphones are a serious threat to people. Be cautious at every step and avoid above mentioned risks and always take preventive measure to keep yourself and your smartphone data safe and secure. Because, Prevention is better than Smartphone disaster.
